lyrical jazz

went for lyrical jazz with jane yesterday. class was at 8pm, but we were at cityhall at 6pm to practise and dance for fun- at the place near esplanade where the bboys are usually spotted? there were people rollerblading too, never noticed until yesterday. its quite odd to see people rollerblading indoors, underground.. and at the start i was feeling all self conscious cos
1. people walking by could see us dancing
2. i could not see myself nor check my lines as there were no mirrors
i cannot stress how large a part of a dancer's life mirrors are, non dancers probably will not understand. or maybe you could. just imagine u just wolfed a plate of squid ink pasta, and right away you are headed for a party where you gotta smile at everyone, yet you dont have a mirror to make sure you don't look like someone featured in an anti-smoking campaign ad.
after awhile, we got used to it, and boy was it fun! =D =D shall consider doing that more often! my only gripe is the lack of air conditioning, and the floor was a little dirty. the huge open space was extremely inviting though! somewhere u can do a few grand jetes and still not need to stop-amazing!

on a less positive note, its quite saddening that i absolute cannot survive ryan's crunches. why!! just 4 sets. i can only do 1! after weekly pilates classes!! haha! its crazy luh, slow slow i still can, but after the speed picks up its damn laokui cos when i finally muster enough strength to lift myself off the floor, everyone's down already. so i'm half a crunch late. multiply that by two and im one full crunch late.. what pathetic abs! (or rather, lack of abs) =(

class was good though, steps were easier than the wild horses piece. its feels better to have more manageable steps, so i can worry less about getting it and put more effort into dancing the choreography out and feeling the music and steps. lyrical jazz is wonderful! alot of technique overlaps with what i learnt in ballet, but ballet was really restrictive, especially RAD style. lyrical jazz, on the other hand.. its okay or even good at times to look freaking contorted. =D and hair flinging. i love hair flinging! hahaha! i rmb when i first joined vj dance (we did contemp) i had so much difficulty dancing without my hair bunned up, it throws me off balance esp since my hair is so long. but now, i love dancing with my hair down-feels damn good for the hair to be all over the place! i still cant dance with a ponytail, i find it distracting.. but i dont intend to work on that. HAHA.

ryan's choreo is amazing as well! cant wait for friday! i switched from anan's hiphop to ryan's mtv groove. not that anan isn't good, but hiphop just doesnt really suit me. the whole boyish yoyo thing.. mtv groove looked kinda like street jazz to me. lyrical JAZZ. street JAZZ. jazz is such a broad genre of dance! in the past i used to relate jazz to music all the time. the kind that puts people to sleep.. (yes yes i know im not being diplomatic, but it does have a lullaby effect on me) and when people asked about for my email address, they naturally assumed i like listening to jazz music. i shall now, for the first time, confess that i never enjoyed jazz music. i only included the word jazz cos i thought it sounded cool. HEH. sounds stupid, but i can admit now since that was a long long time ago. =D but now, JAZZ. its a beautiful word for something i love doing!
