demand and supply of girls
they wanna go clubbing again on tuesday before enlisting. and kejing invited his one-year-older-jesseca-liu-lookalike to come along. "enough alr okay don invite so many girls!" i told him. if not i will depreciate in value. rusty economics gears started to spin in my head. since im bored today i shall share the analysis.
let us assume that each girl is identical in desirability. for a more realistic analysis, let us assume that the girls that are being considered in the analysis are desired la okay. this is because guys will only ask out ppl they want to be around.
this may be due to looks, personality etc etc. which is not the point here.
now for the first diagram. ppl who know econs, i don have to explain the whole diagram do i? as we can see, consumer and producer welfare is maximised and there is no deadweight loss at the equilibrium price and quantity. Consumer surplus refers to the welfare and happiness of the guys. Producer surplus refers to the welfare and happiness of the girls.
now for the second diagram. when supply of girls shifts leftwards from Ss eqm to Ss1, we see that consumer surplus (guys welfare and happiness) reduces dramatically to the pathetic bit of pink triangle. Producer surplus (girls happiness), on the other hand, is increased to that rectangle over there. There is a dead weight loss as shown by the shaded region due to a shortage of girls by Q1Qeqm. In other words, there is excess demand of girls by guys by Q1Qeqm. Also, the price of girls, which is also their value, increases to P1.
In brief, the two impt things are that:
1. value of girls increases from Peqm to P1
2. Girls are happier while guys are less happy
moving on to the third diagram. when supply of girls shifts rightwards from Sseqm to Ss2, we see that consumer surplus (guys happiness) increases, while producer surplus (girls happiness) is now reduced. There is again a dead weight loss represented by the shaded region, and is this time caused by an excess supply of girls relative to guys by QeqmQ2. Also, the value of girls fall from Peqm to P2.
In brief, the two impt things are that:
1. value of girls falls from Peqm to P2
2. Girls are less happy while guys are happier
Oh yeah and we must assume ceteris paribus. This is because my dear brother pointed out a flaw in my analysis. Girls tend to bunch together when there are too many of them, leaving guys all alone. So it will not be logical anymore that guys welfare increases. Hmm. very intersting. On the other hand, it may not necessarily apply because from observation, such behaviour usually occurs for girls aged 16 and under. Which doesn't apply in my case, since i'm 18 going on 19. So dear brother, hehh. Unfortunately this might not be very accurate for you beacause you're only 15 going on 16. And even if the girls you go out with are my age, i doubt they would take much interest in you. =) =) =)
